First Aid Guide for Illness & Emergencies

Frostbite

Step 1

  • Get the person into shelter or a warm place and into dry clothing or a warm blanket. Remove any jewelry and wet clothes.

Step 2

  • Call 911 if the deeper tissues feel cold and stiff or if the person is hypothermic, shivering, and confused.

Step 3

  • Rewarm the frostbitten area in warm water (not hot) for about 30 minutes. Soak and swirl until the parts become normal color and are no longer numb. If you have a thermometer, the water should be between 98.6° F to 102.2° F ( 37° to 39° C).

Step 4

  • If you do not have warm water, use body heat, such as tucking frostbitten hands into the armpits or placing warm hands over frostbitten ears.

Step 5

  • Drink warm liquids (but not alcohol), and for pain during rewarming take ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®, etc.) or acetaminophen (Tylenol®, etc.).

Step 6

  • Go to the Emergency Room for severe frostbite injuries.
